Opinion: Social Policy or Governmental Change

Which Is The Nation More Focused On? Should You Be Concerned?

At this time, now more than ever, we are seeing an influx of social policy coming into state legislatures all over the south and even making its way up to the federal government. We are witnessing social policy cover up legislative dockets instead of an actual policy that betters communities, economies, educational systems, and much more. It has been said that the government should not dictate what happens in people's bedrooms, and I think the government has taken the step to do just that.

Now, we are seeing rights being taken away, such as the overturning of Roe V. Wade by the Supreme Court recently. This eliminated the constitutional right of women to get abortions. Now women cannot make a certain decision about their bodies. However, the baby that is born is more often than not cared for adequately and/or is terminated improperly by a desperate woman.

After the overturning of Roe V. Wade, the government tried to push protections again gay marriage. United State Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas mentioned revisiting the case that made gay marriage a constitutional right. This led lawmakers to issue protections in case something like this happened. However, we are seeing many lawmakers vote against it. Yet another instance where the government attempts to dictate what people can and cannot do with their lives.

Another one that has recently hit the media is the protection of interracial marriage. Justice Clarence Thomas, previously mentioned, is in an interracial marriage yet does not believe in protecting the right of anyone to get married. As well, there were legislators who voted not to preserve interracial marriage despite themselves being in interracial marriage. The bigger question is whether they do not read the bills they vote on or they or possibly incompetent congress members.

Rather than limiting what people can do with each other where both parties are consent adults, let's focus on the issue plaguing our nation. COVID-19 is still a problem in our country, and we could better focus our time on preventing it from surging again.

We could also focus on the rise of inflation which is destroying the middle and low class right now, including myself! Or infrastructure, these are just a few examples of what the government should focus on. I urge anyone who reads to reach out to their local representatives by call or mail and ask them to do their job and make the nation a better place instead of telling people how to live.
